5 Estate Planning Questions You May Not Have Asked Yet
You may already know you need a will. You may have heard about trusts and powers of attorney. But knowing the names of estate-planning documents doesn't necessarily mean you know what your own plan should look like.
Here are five questions worth asking before you decide you're “all set.”
1. Who would handle my finances if I couldn't?
A spouse or family member can't simply step in and handle everything because they are related to you. Certain decisions may require legal authority.
2. Would my beneficiary designations match my estate plan?
Your will isn't the only thing that determines where your assets go. Retirement accounts, life insurance, and other accounts may have their own beneficiary designations.
3. What happens if I become incapacitated?
Estate planning isn't only about death. Your plan can also address what happens if an illness, accident, or other situation leaves you unable to make decisions for yourself.
4. Are my important documents actually organized?
Having documents is one thing. Knowing where they are, whether they are current, and who needs access to them is another.
5. Does my plan still fit my life?
Marriage, divorce, children, home purchases, new accounts, business interests, and other changes can all affect an estate plan.
Have Questions? Bring Them!
You don't have to figure out every answer on your own.
Our monthly estate planning webinar, “When It All Goes Down, Would Your Family Be Protected?”, is an opportunity to learn more about these decisions and ask questions about the estate-planning process.
If you've been meaning to get a better understanding of what your estate plan should actually address, this is a good place to start.
